Most, if not all, religions have some spaces that they consider sacred in some way. From the perspective of someone in a religion, what makes a space sacred will likely be linked to beliefs in the presence of some divine being either being present in that space or having been present there in the past. From an outsider, academic perspective, though, spaces are sacred because the members of a religion treat that space differently than they treat other spaces. They do not treat that space differently because it is inherently sacred; the space is sacred because they treat it differently.
Based on your understanding of Jewish history and the video about Jerusalem, explain what makes Jerusalem a sacred city to Jews and other religions (either Christianity or Islam). Why is this city so important to them? How do they treat the city, or specific parts of the city, as sacred space?
Does a sacred place need to be a physical location, and does it need to exist in a religious context, or can it be a space that is deeply important and special? Do you have a sacred place and, if so, how do you treat it differently than other spaces?
