Extra notes
Domestic Abuse – focus on the experiences of children living in homes where they hear and witness domestic abuse. Consider the signs, indicators, and effects and link this to the impact this could have on their educational ability. Consider the challenges faced should the family be forced to move suddenly for their immediate safety, this could be to a refuge, family member or friend’s home as a temporary measure or longer term. The impact of hearing or witnessing domestic violence can be very traumatic for a child and result in emotional or psychological abuse (Cleaver, Unell and Aldgate, 2011). Children may not realise that what’s happening is abuse. Even if they do, they might not tell anyone about it because they’re scared of what will happen, or ashamed about what people will think. Around 1 in 5 children have been exposed to domestic abuse (Radford, L. et al 2011, p47).
