This paper is for my science fiction film class. One of the prompts my prof give us was: Provide a detailed,
in depth analysis of one science fiction work film or television
program/episode. You may employ any of
one or more of the modes of analysis we have discussed in class.
Here are some of the films we watched in class that you may know (write the paper on ONE of them):
-Alien
-The Matrix
-Blade Runner
– E.T.
-12 Monkeys
-2001: A Space Odyssey
-Total Recall (1990)
-Avatar (2009)
-Terminator (1984)
Here are some of the modes of analysis that my prof gave us (Choose one to write the paper, whichever one is easiest for
you):
Sociological/Reflection.
What does the film reflect about the culture within which it was created? What
does it reflect about the specific time period in which it was created? What
events and trends does it reflect? What does the work tell us about the values,
beliefs, and attitudes, and the fears and aspirations, of its readers/audience
and their society and culture?
Feminist/Gender/Sexuality.
What does the work communicate about gender, sex roles, sexual orientation, and
sexuality? Does it reinforce traditional views or stereotypes, convey evolving
understandings, progressive ideas, etc.? How are gender and sexuality displaced
onto symbols (e.g., aliens, space, technology)? What does it reflect about the
culture and times, power relationships, psychodynamics, etc., related to these
topics?
Readers/Audiences.
How do readers/audiences receive, decode, and interpret the work? How effective
is the work in achieving its desired effect on readers/audiences, as opposed to
failing or being misinterpreted? What differences exist in reception and
interpretation between different readers and audiences based on level of
education, experience and sophistication with the medium and genre, age,
gender, nationality, etc.? How does the work address the reader/audience, and
perhaps comment on the act of reading or on being a spectator?
Religious/Mythological.
Are there significant religious themes present? Does the work draw on biblical
narrative and themes? Does the work represent an attempt at religious allegory,
or involve semi-allegorical elements? Are references and themes drawn from
classical mythology present?

Note: One good Idea can be writing about The Terminator and the Religious/Mythological. There is a lot of info on how
The Terminator is related to the Bible !
