Select a film to view from the list provided and write up a 3 page reaction paper
using sociological insight as related to race/ethnic and or minority groups. In your
discussion you should place emphasis on the application of sociological concepts /
theory / paradigms in order to understand the material. You can focus your discussion
on a particular interpersonal relationship, an individual character relating to larger
society / institutions, or group relations. Also, take special note of dominant/subordinate
group dynamics, and provide historical context which gives insight to the problem
exposed in the film.
A good paper will discuss a scene from the film (roughly 2 sentences) and
describe it in sociological terms. Use the text to define the conceptualized or applied
term, then use the scholarly journal articles to support your claim with current research,
and incorporating any facts and figures that may be appropriate from the book or journal
articles. You should also use an academic book from the library to expose the social
and historical context in which the situation arises. Keep in mind the grading rubric
when writing your paper to make sure you are satisfying the requirements. Make sure to
use your textbook as a reference along with at least 2 scholarly articles and 2 academic
books (4). This paper is not a report on the film, remember your instructor has already
viewed all of these films and does not need a recap. This is your opportunity to apply
what you’ve learned in class/es to a real (documentary) / fictional scenario.
You absolutely need to read and apply the chapter text concerning the
characters/subjects you are evaluating in the film. Hence if you are evaluating G.I. Jane,
you need to consider the chapter entitled “Women the Oppressed Majority” and apply
the some of the concepts from that chapter although you are not limited to only that
chapter.

You should be using at least 2 scholarly articles as reference for your project and 2 academic books, 4 references in total.
If you need help finding resources for your project please email me and write to me with your thoughts on the direction of your paper. I’m happy to make suggestions concerning articles or selecting a book. One of the books you use to write your project should be your textbook.
For example, if you selected the film, “G.I. Jane.” you would want to use chapter 15 “Women the Oppressed Majority,” and include terms like sexism, misogyny, prejudice, discrimination, glass ceiling, patriarchy and conflict or feminist theories.
