Formal Self-Assessment
Authors Note
This essay was quite difficult for myself to write, as I have a hard time writing reflection essays. I feel it helped me broaden my spectrum of writing to different styles and text. My biggest struggle in this essay I feel was figuring out how to correctly format the essay and having to find different opportunities throughout my week to write it. What is the readers feedback on the conventions of this essay? I also feel that the MLA format was not necessarily difficult but a different challenge level for myself as I have always on APA format for all my previous classes. What are the readers thoughts on how the format?
Throughout my life, writing has always been a passion, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. In my high school years, I loved being in my writing classes, as I feel writing is one of the best ways to express yourself when you are too shy or timid to say your words aloud. Throughout my essays I have found I have many strengths, but also many weaknesses. After reading the texts English 102 Learning Outcomes, The Sponsors of Literacy and Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing, I was able to understand more in depth the skills I have achieved, the ones that need work and reflection on my personal literacy journey.
Although writing has always been a passion of mine that seemed to come to me so easily, the technical side of writing did not; I have always struggled with spelling and grammar within my writing. In My Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing, I was able to really see what my strength is, which is being flexible with my writing. My life has always been more to juggle than normal, which became even more prominent when I became a mom to three young boys that have a lot of medical needs and a bonus daughter as well. As one might imagine even with kids in general, it tends to create the need for unorthodox writing times and places, which always keeps my writing approach different. In Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing it states the “successful writers use different processes that vary over time and depend on the particular task.” Even when I didn’t have access to some components of literacy, being able to create my writing from different angles every time always made the writing come easier to me.
In Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy, it talks about literacy sponsors, the people they would sponsor and why. In this text is describes a sponsor as “older relatives, teachers, priests, supervisors, military officers, editors, influential authors. Sponsors, as we ordinarily think of them, powerful figures who bank-roll events or smooth the way for initiate.” (Brandt). Which for me my sponsor would’ve been my parents. They always pushed me to do my best and held me to a higher standard than my siblings. With them holding me to this higher standard I feel it didn’t just make me want to be better but made me think I needed to be. I always max out on classes between advanced classes and AP classes, work, sports, and daily home chores I was always spread thin. My parents my have given me the drive to do better, but they didn’t give me the financial stability to full achieve my best. Growing up in my home we didn’t have a lot of money, we lived paycheck to paycheck and barely had enough food in the house to make it through to the next paycheck. Which also meant I didn’t have access to the technology I needed for my classes unless I was physically at school. But in light of these setbacks, this is where I know my passion for writing stemmed from. I would write stories projecting my feelings and life as actual assignments that no one knew the truth behind. The truth that we barely could scrape by, that we were too poor to have a computer for homework let alone internet to turn in the assignments.
I NEED TO ADD A FEW MORE THINGS TO THIS PARAGRAPH YET BEFORE TRANSISTIONING INTO THE CONCLUSSION. Any other thoughts or suggestions feel free to make comments by them or down here etc. I didn’t have time to finish the rest of it yet before some of my kids get home from school.
