Session 9 Biblical Perspective
Read the following testimony that relates to a disease involving the endocrine system and then reflect on the two questions provided. Write up a 1-page response to the reflection questions in Microsoft Word. There are no right or wrong answers to these questions – it is an activity to challenge you to think about how a biblical perspective impacts concepts and ideas we have been covering in this session. You will receive all of the points for this assignment when you submit your response to the reflection questions.
Devotion
Liver cirrhosis has many etiologies; however, the most common cause of liver disease is still alcoholism. The Bible reminds us that our body is a temple of God and scripturally we see reminders of this in several places. Consider the following verses from Scripture:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV): “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NIV): “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.”
Reflection Questions
Think about how you could use these verses in counseling a person who has a past history of alcohol abuse. How could you help this individual to stop drinking and destroying their body, which is God’s temple? How can you use this scripture to counsel someone who is not a Christian?
