Sexuality from the colonial period to now

Okay so this is a midterm exam, but in a essay format. Eventhough it should be 5 pages in total, it is going to be two
seperate 2.5 page essays answering two different essay questions that I will attach below. The essays does not require any outside sources because they have to strictly draw from the material that I will attach below.

Question 1. Using Intimate Matters and to a lesser degree The Invention of Heterosexuality, highlight the changes that occurred over time, especially during the 1800s. John D’Emilio and Estelle Freedman highlight several shifts regarding sexuality that occurred from Colonial America through the late 1800s. What were some of the most significant changes? Why did they occur, according to the authors? Compare and contrast the chapters focusing on the Colonial period with those focusing on the 1800s, particularly after 1850. Explain how sexuality was constructed before the Revolutionary War, how it began to change into the 1800s, and how these changes accelerated and crystallized by the end of the 1800s. What are some of the ways ideas concerning sexualities have been used to reinforce violence, inequality, and systems of domination? How did these ways change over time, from the 1600s to the late 1800s, according to D’Emilio and Freedman? Conversely, in what ways did the inequalities continue? With both of these texts, how did sexualities begin to change toward the end of the 1800s, with the role of the scientists in the mid-to-late 1800s and into the early 1900s? How does Katz examine these changes differently than D’Emilio and Freedman? Obviously you can’t focus on everything, so

Question 2. Using Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers and especially The Invention of Heterosexuality, outline the historical development of sexual identities, particularly the invention of heterosexual identities (you can focus on homosexual identities too, as Odd Girls does, but The Invention obviously focuses more on the creation of heterosexuality). How, why, and when (approximately) did this change come about? How did this shift change how sexual acts and behaviors were viewed? What was different about the construction of heterosexuality and homosexuality when they first developed from how they were constructed later? How and why did these constructions change over time? Here, be sure to explain how the various doctors were defining the identities and behaviors in different ways. Finally, how do Katz and Faderman understand and examine these changes differently?
