One of the topics this week was Shays Rebellion an uprising of working and middle class individuals who found themselves suffering economically and often in debt. Economic downturns only made matters worse. The problems became so bad, in the rebels eyes, that they decided to rise up and challenge the government in a number of areas.
Today and in recent years, many Americans also are suffering economically and increasingly find themselves in what feels like a vicious cycle and system of debt and poverty. For some, the problems grow increasingly worse by the year and may begin to look for ways to change their plight.
It raises the question, is a modern Shays Rebellion possible?
In your main post discuss the following:
Briefly identify and discuss the causes of protest during Shays Rebellion.
Briefly identify and discuss the actions the rebels took in an attempt to improve their situations.
Identify and discuss the parallels between the issue at the heart of Shays Rebellion and the economic conditions of today.
Discuss whether a modern Shays Rebellion is possible and why.
If you do not think a modern Shays is possible or likely, explain why and identify issues that are lacking that would make a modern Shays possible.
If a modern Shays did occur, what would happen? Who would people protest against and how? Would they succeed or face a fate similar to Daniel Shays and his rebels?
