Instructions: Select ONE complete (45+ minutes) survivor profile interview in the Shoah VHA video collection that extends, challenges, or offers alternatives to the profile themes we have discussed or read about in class. Write a brief summary and analysis of the survivor profile interview you watch. Use the readings and class documents on profile writing as a springboard for own analysis.
To access the Shoah archive, click on https://ferris.libguides.com/az.php?a=s (and scroll down until you see the database titled Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive), or go to the Shoah Resources link under the Major Writing Assignment #1 – Important Documents section in the Canvas Modules. You may need to log in with your myFSU credentials to access the Shoah database, and you may need to register on the Shoah VHA site to access the videos. Sometimes it takes a few hours to access and choose an interview. This assignment should be approximately 2 – 3 double spaced, typed pages.
The summary and analysis should have three parts:
Part 1: Summary of the profile/testimony. Write a brief summary of the main events in this survivor’s story. Give a description of this person’s experiences, as told in the interview/profile.
Part 2: Response to the interview technique. In other words, describe the interview technique and discuss the approach and effectiveness of the interviewer. What kinds of questions are asked, why, and to what effect? Does she or he guide the interviewee, ask many questions, follow up, and so on? What impact do you think the interviewer’s demeanor and approach have on the content of the interview? On the emotionality of the interviewee? On the story that gets told? Give examples. What might you say about the relationship between the interviewer and interviewee? To what degree is the interviewer seeking factual detail, narrative coherence, and/or remembrance of feeling, etc.?
Part 3: Your explanation of the theme that stands out to you from the interview and your personal response to the interview. Highlight how this testimony profile extends, challenges, or offers alternatives to the profile themes we have discussed or read about in class. What was the theme of this profile testimony? The theme of the testimony/profile interview might be courage; modes of survival; coping with hunger; resilience; attitudes toward perpetrators; forgiveness, blame, and revenge; resistance activities; personal responsibility; overcoming hate; oppression; etc. Discuss how this theme plays out in the interview you watched. What did you learn from the theme? How did hearing the profile testimony make you feel? What did you learn about the Holocaust/Rwanda/Cambodia/etc.? Did hearing about this experience raise important questions about values and how to live your life/personal responsibility? Explain/tell how. What purposes might the visual testimony profile have beneath or beyond those articulated by the survivor themselves?
