Your essay should do both, but it may emphasize one over the other. Your thesis should provide your interpretation of how each text handles a specific thematic topic of your choice. What do you think each story communicates about the thematic topic? How is the thematic topic represented in similar and different ways in each story? Your body paragraphs should examine other elements of fiction (plot, characters, point of view, setting, symbolism, figurative language, and/or style) as evidence to support your interpretation of the theme. You are expected to use direct quotes and examples from the literature. You should use a clear structure that remains consistent throughout the paper; choose either the block method or the point-by-point method of organization.
