I. Persuasive Writing
a. The purpose of persuasive writing is to assert an opinion and defend it by offering supporting evidence (data).
b. You must convince the reader to agree with you.
c. In the process, you deal with opposing views, thus convincing him/her of the superiority of your argument.
d. Additionally, a good writer may present emotional as well as rational appeal.
e. All of your reasoning should lead to a logical conclusion.
II. Writing Process
a. Choose a controversial topic. We have been working on this topic for a while now.
b. Create a debatable statement that can be proved; this will be your thesis statement.
c. The thesis statement is the sentence that tells the reader the focus of your essay. It must be a debatable statement that asserts your opinion.
d. Avoid announcing the thesis statement as if it were a thesis statement. In other words, avoid using phrases such as “The purpose of this paper is . . . . ” or “In this paper, I will attempt to . . . Don’t begin to write your essay until you have a clear thesis!
e. Gather all factual information using guidelines for documentation. Be sure to keep track of your sources.
f. Consider all potential explanations, rating them in order of importance or relevance to the thesis/hypothesis statement.
g. Assemble collected facts to support each explanation.
h. Prepare an outline arranging the explanations in the best order for the desired effect. The purpose of an outline is to make your task easier. As you write your outline, ask yourself whether each idea serves to clarify and strengthen the thesis/hypothesis. Use the sample outline by inserting your specific information into the outline structure.
