Should Employment Non-Compete Agreements be Banned?
Go to Congress.gov and locate, then read H.R. 1367, the “Workforce Mobility Act of 2021,” introduced by Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.) in the current, 117th Congress. The bill would ban noncompete agreements in employment contracts, subject to exceptions. An identical version of the bill, introduced in the Senate (S. 483) by Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), is pending in the Senate.
Both bills have bipartisan support. (See the cosponsors listed in the bills.) President Biden campaigned on a call for Congress to pass legislation banning all non-compete agreements, except those that protect a narrowly defined category of trade secrets.
Write a letter/email to a member of the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate explaining why you are for or against the bill’s enactment into law. Address the public policy effects, economic effects, and other implications of the bill you see, and state why the bill’s passage would be either good or bad policy for the country.
Your letter should be no less than 200 words and no more than 400 words.
