Summary of the Social Capital Paper:
The first thing you will need to do is to read the Bowling Alone article by Robert Putnam. You can access the article in the Social Capital folder with the other resources and handouts in your Module folder. Next, look over the handout that lists the “100 Things You Can Do to Increase Social Capital, as well as the student examples found in the “Social Capital” folder. You will need to select one of these social capital activities in order to begin constructing your paper. In selecting your activity, here are a couple of items to note:
You may select an activity that you have completed in the past, but you MUST complete the activity again during this semester for purposes of this assignment. If it is determined that you simply wrote about an activity that you completed in the past, you will receive a zero for this assignment.
Please use common sense in the selection of your activity– that is, do not put yourself in harm’s way or endanger you or others when selecting and completing your activity. For example, providing a ride for a hitchhiker would be an example of social capital, BUT it could potentially place you in harm’s way – so please use common sense when selecting and carrying out your social capital activity. In addition, due to social distancing, there are plenty of activities you can complete that still fulfill an activity in the light of social capital – that is, FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, etc. with a friend; reaching out to an old friend via email, phone call, text, etc. Be creative in the light of social distancing
Students will write up a 4-6 page summary (typed & double-spaced) in which you reflect on how you carried out the activity, as well as highlighting the importance and significance of this activity. Note: Anything less than 4 complete pages will be penalized points. The cover page and work cited page (if applicable) DO NOT count towards the page count.
The scope and purpose of this assignment is more than simply carrying out a social capital activity for this course – it’s larger than us. Refer to the sample papers provided in the “Social Capital” folder. You will simply upload your papers in the designated dropbox in the Module. As for the formatting, see the “Instructions For All Written Assignments” in the Social Capital Folder.
Lastly, make sure to thoroughly read the Academic Integrity statement below, especially as it pertains to plagiarism. I submit all of your papers through Turnitin.com and will uphold my integrity policy, which could result in you failing the course, as well as being expelled from the college, which is something that stays on your academic record and follows you to any institution that you transfer to. Bottom line: do not cheat!!! Note: Do not forget to first complete your quiz, as it helps to ensure you set yourself up for success.
***Successful Social Capital Papers: Papers will be graded on activity selection, format, grammar, style, content delivery, analysis, and general quality. Overall, your professor needs to see: 1). Introduction– discuss why you chose a particular activity or activities; 2). Body– in essence, this portion of the paper will be more of a reflection paper. You will reflect on the activity as you were participating and completing it; and 3). Conclusion– discuss how it impacted or affected you as well as other individuals and society. Lastly, in the conclusion, you will need to illustrate your understanding of social capital as presented by Putnam. In order to convince me that you have grasped the concept(s) from Putnam, you should be referencing and briefly citing him throughout the entire paper, but especially in the conclusion.
