Social Construction

For this discussion, head for about 100 words for Question #1 and 150 or so words for Question #2.

Question #1

In 2014, Coca Cola aired the ad below during the SuperBowl. The ad features a verse (or two?) of “America, the Beautiful” sung in different languages. (The lyrics can be found here – https://www.scoutsongs.com/lyrics/americathebeautiful.html ) Watch the ad (below). First, how many languages do you hear? (Notice how you marked the transitions? (e.g., changes in faces, rhythm, scenery, etc…)) In the past, I’ve played this ad for classes and groups have reported they hear between 3 and 9 languages. (How is that even possible when we all watched the same thing at the same time???) How would Zerubavel explain the range in the number of languages a class might hear? (Be sure to include which of his concepts he might use…) Thinking about the material we’ve covered so far this semester, anything else you notice or want to comment on about this ad?

Question #2 video

2. Watch the segment on DACA doctors (https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/515466/what-will-happen-to-undocumented-doctors/). (Notice the opening scenes/doctor are in Philly!) Think about Zerubavel and how we construct categories by lumping and splitting. How many categories are represented in the segment? (e.g., splitting gives us: citizen, non-citizen). Think about the language various people are using. How do the words they use shape your feelings about the groups being discussed? (Remember Newman’s discussion of language in Chapter 3?) Think about Mills’ questions on how society is organized. In the case of the DACA doctors, what social institutions/social forces are involved? Think about the makers of this video. With which of the three sociological perspectives do you think they are aligned and why? (Remember Chapter 2 of Newman?)
