WHO points out that social determinants of health are economic and social elements that can impact group and individual disparities in health status. A variety of factors can have an impact on economic and social situations. Only a few of these factors include a person’s income or occupation, education and literacy, job and working conditions, early experiences, social support, physical environments, and coping skills. Public opinion on social determinants of health, I believe, will impact healthcare policy in the following ways. Opinions are everywhere, and they have a lot of power even when they aren’t requested. As an example, consider someone who consumes a lot of alcohol and develops cirrhosis. Although people do not fully understand this person’s condition, many would believe that he or she caused the problem and do not deserve certain sorts of health care, as Fuchs (2017) explained.
Additionally, many individuals believe that just because a family is poor does not imply that they do not need health care since they did not work harder to get more money (Morone & Ehlke, 2015). Unfortunately, other events in a person’s life may have led them to accept a job paying $10-11 an hour. My grandmother, for example, raised me, three sisters, and three cousins in a one-bedroom house. She was unable to work because she was preoccupied with us. My grandfather was the household’s sole breadwinner. While my grandmother did not choose poverty, she was forced to live in it due to unforeseen circumstances. The public opinion of each individual has an impact on healthcare policy.
If given the opportunity to lead my organization’s efforts to address social determinants of health, I believe I would make changes based on the community’s specific needs. When I was a kid living with my grandparents, we were always worried about medication when we went to the doctor. Based on my personal experience, the most likely solution is recognizing that each household faces different challenges. I’d get to know the people in the region, including narrowing down some of the issues and then working to solve them. For example, if a community member needs transportation or medication, we will attempt to help them.
Health care policies should prioritize already implemented and effective programs, expand health care resources to provide universal access and place a higher priority on the value of treatment provided to patients rather than on the volume of care. I believe that health care should become a top priority for both citizens and government officials. More policies aimed at supporting all people would get through congress if health care policies were prioritized. (English Standard Version Bible, Proverbs 19:17) says whoever is kind to the poor gives to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed. This scripture means a lot to me, and I hope that I will make a huge impact and help a lot of people one day.
