Purpose of the assignment: In this assignment, you will be asked to practice critical thinking
and writing skills, learn to develop points for readers, practice argumentative
writing, and practice communicating an idea clearly and fully.
Before you start researching, decide how you feel about employers screening people’s social
media before deciding to hire them or not. Should a person’s profiles be a part of that process?
Remember to think about this from both an employer (corporation or small-business) and the
potential employee. You can only argue one side of the issue, and remember to stay on topic. I
would recommend brainstorming before you start research to decide how you feel.
Basic Guidelines
Introduction with
thesis
Introductions provide general background for the topic.
Your essay must have a clear, argumentative thesis statement.
Thesis is the last sentence of the introduction.
This is a statement should answer the topic question being asked.
Body Paragraphs The body of the essay needs to develop three different reasons for
the thesis.
Topic sentences should clearly explain each reason individually.
Develop the idea and explain it fully / do not repeat information
between paragraphs.
Body paragraphs are where you should use source material to quote
and explain in the paragraph. Do not use quotes as the first or last
sentence of a paragraph.
Summary First sentence should restate thesis (vary wording).
The closing portion of your essay needs to do more than merely
restate the key ideas you’ve discussed in the body of your text. For
example,
No new ideas in conclusion
