Purpose:
ü To help you
organize your argument essay and the research you use in that essay.
ü To help
ensure that you have valid sources to enhance the ideas in your essay.
Course learning
objectives worked towards:
a)
Demonstrate
research skills by locating, evaluating, and organize information from a
variety of sources.
b) Analyze
post-secondary sources to distinguish purpose, organization, and logic of an
argument across a variety of platforms
c) Produce
organized, unified, and coherent work using correct grammar, mechanics,
diction, and a standard formatting and documentation style.
d) Create informative and persuasive texts in
which the main points are supported by appropriate evidence.
Assignment Instructions:
1. Start with the outline you
posted on the Discussion Board for the Outline Feedback Assignment. You can make changes to that outline based on
feedback you received or research you’ve done since you posted the outline.

The basic outline should include:
ü A title for your
essay
ü Valid thesis
statement
ü Minimum 3 body
paragraphs and each has a topic that relates to and supports the thesis
ü Valid Counterargument

Counterargument is mitigated or refuted
–
It would be better to have the counterargument in a
separate body paragraph, but it can be part of a body paragraph.
ü Conclusion – one
sentence (2 if necessary) that gives the ‘so what?’ or significance of your
thesis (= not a restatement of the thesis and not the complete essay
conclusion)
(up to 5 marks for the basic outline)
2. Add research to your outline.
a. You must
have a minimum of three references.
i. It’s a good idea to have
at least one reference in each body paragraph.
ii. There is no maximum number
of references you can use.
iii. You must
include at least one reference from the GBC Library Learning Commons
1. You can – but do not have
to – use a reference from your Library Research Assignment
b. Use quotes from your references
to back up specific points in your outline.
i. Think about ‘they say’ (= reference
says)/’I say’ (= how you connect the source to your outline) when you choose
your quotes.
ii. Cut from the original
source and paste exactly where each quote connects with a point on your outline. Don’t forget quotation marks.
c. Use an intext citation
after each quote.
d. You must
have a reference to back up your counterargument.
i. You can – but don’t have
to – use the reference you used in the Counterargument Paragraph Assignment
ii. You can, but don’t have to
have a reference to back up how you mitigate or refute the counterargument.
(Up to 4 marks for showing where/how you use specific
research in the outline)
3. Write an annotated references page after your outline.
For
each reference:
a) Write the full reference
to match the intext citation you use in the outline. Use APA 7th edition formatting.
b) Write the main idea of the
reference – 1 or 2 sentences. Use your
own words.
c)
Verify the source/claim.

What does the verifying website say about the source or claim?
d) Why do you think this is a
good source to use in your essay?
(Up to 6 points per reference ÷
the number of references = up to 6 marks for the annotated references)
