Example 1
Research Questions: What are the author’s research questions?
-The general question being asked is whether the currently imagined concept of sexual citizenship is universal.
Theoretical Frameworks: What are the theoretical frameworks out of which the author’s question(s) emerge and with which they interpret their data and evidence? Which bodies of sociological knowledge is the author in dialogue with, in their text?
-The theoretical frameworks involved in this article are a bit expansive given the globalized nature of the concept being interrogated. Social constructionism, intersectionality, international political economics (politics and economics of sex), just to name a few.
-The body of social knowledge exported by Western civilization as it pertains to non-normative sexuality as is the topic of dialogue in this essay.
Data and Evidence: What forms of data and evidence does the author collect and analyze to answer the research questions?
-Much of the analysis for this essay revolves around historical political policy and the understanding of citizenship, specifically the influence/impact one’s sexuality has on that citizenship and the rights they enjoy. However, a key point of the essay is the fact there is no universal definition of sexual freedom much less sexual citizenship; perspectives differ throughout society.
Methodologies: What specific procedures did the author (or the people the author are referring) to use to collect their data and evidence?
-The author collected and interrogated scholarship associated with sexual citizenship.
Main Arguments: What are the key points of the material, what are the take-aways?
-The key point and take-away of the article, as discussed above, is there is no singular/universal definition of sexual rights or citizenship, nor can there be based on the varied perspectives throughout the world.
Other Thoughts and Connections:
-There is no universal definition of sexual rights much less sexual citizenship. There are too many differing perspectives on what those rights should look like based on differing societal contexts. The globalized Western ideal of sexual rights and sexual citizenship is not actually global.
