Choose an issue that meets the definition of a Social Problem according to our textbook – it should be an issue that is relevant to children and families. This should be clearly described in your presentation of the problem. The identified social problem should not be one addressed in the course. In a 7-8 page paper (not including APA cover page and References), identify why you think this is a social problem, give a history of the problem on the macro and micro levels, the causes of it (according to the research), and its impact on modern day society. Then, specifically discuss how one population in society is affected by it. Be specific and clearly integrate the research/literature. Briefly analyze your chosen problem according to the three theoretical perspectives described in the text (structural-functionalist, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionist).
You are expected to include at least five additional scholarly articles (not course readings – from peer-reviewed journals, not from newspapers, magazines, or websites). Four of your five sources should have been published in the past 15 years (2006-2021). You may use only one course reading, in addition to the course textbook. You may include websites for statistical information only and only from .gov and .org websites. Many websites are not scholarly in nature and should not be used for this assignment.
The paper should be written and sources cited in APA format. This is a formal academic research paper, therefore, no first person statements should be included.
