In this Unit, we are focusing on Domestic Policy, meaning the programs that the US Government funds for its citizens. We touched on this our module about the bureaucracy. The bureaucracy is the means of the programs, now we focus on the actual programs and the results. Social Security is one of the largest of these programs and its original purpose was to provide income for widows and for the elderly. In the 1930s, it was assumed that if someone was of the working class, the man would work until he died and if he could not work anymore, his children would provide for him and their mother. This did not always happen. Social Security was established in order to prevent these people from ending up on the street. It was a relief for the first generation to receive it. Now it is assumed money that many depend upon in their retirement plans. What do you think about the state of Social Security today? What policies do you support in regards to it? Why?
