Students research a societal issue related to The Other Wes Moore. In the process, we work on research and source incorporation skills. This is NOT about the memoir not Wes Moore. It is about one of the societal issues discussed in the memoir.
Organizing Essay Two
The purpose of essay two is to educate readers about an issue that you believe impacted the outcome of the two Wes Moores. Your task is to inform and not to persuade readers of anything. Review the rhetorical situation information in the printed material before planning your essay. Assume that your readers have read the book but have not investigated issues generated by the book.
Your challenge will be to organize based on aspects of your information rather than source by source. For example, you do not want one paragraph summarizing one source, and then another summarizing another source, and so on. Instead, you want to think about the types of information that you learned in your research and organize body paragraphs based on what you learned collectively.
For example, pretend that you are researching the impact of heroin on rural communities, and you have four sources. You would not want to inform your readers about what you’ve learned by just providing source summaries; instead, you would think about the kind of information that you learned from your sources collectively. Let’s label your sources A, B, C and D. Maybe one thing that you learned a lot about was the prevalence of heroin addiction in rural communities. Sources A, C and D all have some information about that; then, you write a paragraph about prevalence incorporating information from sources A, C and D. You also learned about causes of the heroin epidemic in rural communities from sources B and C, so you write a causes paragraph using those two sources. In addition, you read some real life examples of people affected by the epidemic from sources A and D, so you write a paragraph using those two sources. Finally, you also learned about the cost of this epidemic to taxpayers in source A, so you use source A to inform readers about cost.
