Answer the questions in a 2 page paper, that is typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 pt. font. Write your response using your own words and without directly quoting the book or other resources. Responses that are not written in your own words will receive a “0.”
You should engage course concepts and theories in your paper. Be sure to define terms and explain terms within your answer. Also, be sure you answer all parts of each question.

Obviously you have engaged with the U.S. public education system, because you are currently attending a public university. Our personal experiences with the education system shape our understanding of how it works, its value, etc. As sociologists, we use sociological perspectives to analyze the social world, not personal experience. Thus, this question asks you to use sociological theories to analyze a personal aspect of your life, education. First, explain the differences between functionalism and conflict theory. Then, discuss the differences in how a functionalist and conflict theorist would explain the PUBLIC education system (focus on K-12) in the United States. Avoid discussing private schools in your answer.
