CHAPTER THREE
Chapter 3: When discussing socialization, sociologists often focus on what we have learned from our agents of socialization (family, peers, school, religion, work, etc….). For this assignment, I want you to think back to your schooling from ages 5-18 (e.g. K-12) and think very specifically about what you learned in school from EITHER sports/athletics or art/music.
Not everyone was into sports or art, some people were into both, but at some point in your K-12 career, you were exposed to both. Whichever topic you choose (sports or art, which includes music/literature), I want you to think about how what you learned from sports or art that has “shaped, molded, influenced” you even to this day. For example, what life lessons have you learned or what skills have you gained from the experience that you still find important, useful, or that have affected how you live your life.
For the sake of this assignment, I’d like you to only focus on EITHER sports OR art, not both, or you “dilute” your reflection 🙂 This is a reflection assignment, so I want you to actually take some time to reflect, or think back, to your earlier years and think about what you learned from, or how you were affected by, those classes, lessons, practices, or games. What I don’t want it just retelling a memory without considering the main point of this chapter, which is socialization.
Write up your reflection in 200 or more words, check for spelling/grammar and use APA citations and references if you need to (though this is all coming from your own life experiences, so you shouldn’t need to google anything!). 10 points total LO 4, 11, 14
CHAPTER FOUR Mini Status Set
Chapter four introduces us to the concepts of statuses and roles. We all OCCUPY statuses and we PLAY roles associated with those statuses. All statuses are EITHER achieved or ascribed. The collection of statuses we occupy at the current time is called our Status Set. Each status has several roles associated with it. A role is an expectation, obligation, right/privilege associated with a particular status. E.g. an expectation of a student is to show up for class. LO 1
For Chapter 4, I want you to think about your own statuses and roles and identify a few of them in the chart below. *Hint statuses are nouns and roles should be verbs/actions
These are YOUR own actual and current statuses; Ive seen people include: prince, doctor, and president before which makes me wonder why theyre taking an intro level sociology class?
Name four statuses in the far-left column, one in each box. The first row is filled in for you with the status and roles of student to show you how its done. No one should use student as his/her/their own example as its already done.
In the second column, you will identify whether your status is achieved or ascribed by bolding or circling the terms already listed. *At least ONE of your statuses should be ASCRIBED.
In the remaining columns to the right of your status, you will list ONE role per box.
You must identify at least THREE roles per status. Again, one per box.
Each box is worth point, for a total of 10 points for the whole chart.
You should be able to fill in the chart below or copy and paste it into a new Word document.
You can also delete the prompts (like status or role) in the boxes when filling them in with your own genius
