We are learning medical sociology concepts and how social epidemiologists study the distribution of illness and disease across society.
Now it’s time to do some of your own research to analyze trends in the real world.
Please be sure follow the steps and provide thorough answers for each of them. The total paper should be around 500-700 words
(roughly 1-1.5 single-spaced pages or 2-3 double-spaced pages), with at least 3 citations from Weitz chapters 3 and 4 (paraphrased in your own words; no direct quotes). We want to assess how you interpret and explain the concepts in your own words, so using direct quotes will not yield an exemplary score.
Step 1
Go to the U.S. Census at https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/PST045221 (Links to an external site.) and find the following
data to report on your state: total population, persons 65 and older, female persons, race and ethnicity breakdowns, high school graduate
and higher, bachelors degree and higher, persons with a disability, persons without insurance, median income, persons in poverty, and at
least 2 additional categories of your choice.
For your convenience, here is a table with all the U.S. data you can fill in and share in your report:
Census data table template.docx
List
your state and U.S. findings. Then, in about 100 words, discuss what stands out to you regarding your state’s findings compared to the
overall United States.
Step 2
Now to https://www.kff.org/state-category/health-status/ (Links to an external site.) and select “Life Expectancy”. Then choose at least 2 additional categories from the list. On each of the three categories, how does your state compare to the national average? What patterns do you see that emerge about different states or regions compared to the overall national average? (about 100-150 words)
Step 3
Use the Population Reference Bureau’s World Population Datasheet embedded here: World Population Datasheet 2021 . Choose at least 3 countries all from different continents, and compare their data to the United States in terms of infant mortality rate, fertility rates for 1990 and 2020, and life expectancy. You can also include any other data from the table you’d like to discuss. The U.S. numbers from the table
are listed at the bottom of page 9 of the report and include
-Infant mortality rate: 5.4 (infant deaths under age 1 per 1,000 live births)
-Fertility rates: 2.0 in 1990, 1.6 in 2020 (number of babies born per childbearing-age woman)
-Life expectancy at birth: 77 years (total), 75 years for men, 80 years for women
In your paper, list the findings specifying which 3 countries you chose, and discuss what stands out about their stats compared to the US? (about 100-150 words)
Step 4
In about 200-300 words, synthesize the overall findings from steps 1-3 within the context of what you are learning from this week’s
course materials. What did you learn overall from all the data from parts 1, 2, and 3 on the social distribution of health and illness in the
U.S. and other nations? Paraphrase specific concepts and cite Weitz chapters 3 and 4 where appropriate (and at least 3 times).
Remember, no direct quotes. We want to see how you explain the concepts in your own words.
Check that your paper meets the basic requirements before uploading:
-Thoroughly answer the prompt (all 4 steps)
-About 500-700 words
Explain and cite the textbook in the sentences where you use the material at least 3 times in your own words
(Weitz, 2020)
-No direct quotes!
