Learning
Objective (LO4): Analyse customer requirements and produce requirement
documentation, demonstrating the use of technical language and vocabulary for
specialist and non-specialist audiences.

SCENARIO
Background
This
case study coursework is meant as a vehicle to explore the whole life cycle of
a software project from requirements capture through to analysis, design,
implementation, testing and documentation. It is a simplistic view of a
realistic system-building exercise using UML as the underlying language for
producing the artefacts needed in the process.
You
You
are to choose USDP or Agile methodologies to deal with the following scenario.
You will take on the roles of all the technical teams, such as Use-Case Specifier
and Systems Analyst, as the case may be while undertaking relevant tasks.

The brief
Your
company has been hired to build a Student Attendance Monitoring System (SAMS)
for the University of Bradford International College (UBIC) “UBICSAMS”.
You are required to design and develop a system that, as soon as a student enters
the learning session venue, it should allow them to register their attendance
for the session and validate their presence up to 3 times. These times are the first
15 minutes (Beginning), half the
duration (Midway) and the last 20 minutes (End) before closing the session. The
system should also allow the subject teacher to validate that the student is
present in each of the three instances. Other potential users of the system are
the attendance monitoring officer, the HOD, and the college director. These
users should be able to generate a couple of attendance reports.

The
first contact your marketing team had with UBIC has given you the following
information about them:

v UBIC
attempted to implement a UBICSAM system before, but the consultancy firm they
used left them with an unusable prototype system before pulling out of the
project.
v Currently,
they are using an automated system provided by the University. It is being
monitored by the estate department and the University’s central attendance.
Because of the system’s limitations, UBIC introduced an attendance register to
be taken by the sessional teachers in MS excel sheets on MS Teams. However, the
system was not good enough as some students that arrived early were seen
scanning attendance for their friends or scanning and leaving the venue before
the teacher came. Also, some students only stay in the class session for half
of the period or arrive when the session is already halfway.
v Attendance
in all class, laboratory and tutorial sessions is done in a similar way. Unfortunately,
there is also a problem of very little communication between the attendance
monitoring officer and the seasonal teachers.

Your
marketing team has identified the following people in UBIC that will be key to
the proposed SAMS project:
v Kevin
Dunkerley: He is the Director of the entire college. He has some knowledge of
IT systems. He is under tremendous pressure from the University to modernise
the college. That is because the University wants to impose a strict 75%
attendance for all students as a requirement for allowing them to write an examination
or submit the final assessment. He picked the previous consultancy firm because
he played tennis with their manager. “Pity, he seemed like a decent chap.”
He said afterwards. Kevin is very keen to get the new system working as soon as
possible.
v Aqeel
Ashraf: He is the HOD of the department comprising Engineering and computing.
He is also responsible for modernising the attendance system as he heads the
department and is vast in IT. He said, “The problem is that people do not
want to change their attitude toward work. The system we built had some
teething problems, but it worked just fine!”
v Hamzah
Ali: He is in charge of monitoring the student’s attendance. “The problem
is student brings all sort of excuses, and sickness is one of the reasons they
give for not attending”, he said.

A
series of separate meetings have been organised for the first week with these
three key people.
Your task for this week

1. You
have to start by taking the role of each technical team member. For example, a
role of Systems Analyst and Use Case Specifier during the interview and
requirement gathering. UI Designer and Use Case Engineer during the design
phase, all the way to tester during system or component testing.

2. Then,
you have to decide who (which role) will interview each of the key people and
come up with a plan of questions you need to ask. Also, you have to discuss
what artefacts you intend to have at the end of the interview step. These could
include:

i.
Use Case Model identifying the main
Actors and Use Cases

ii.
Domain Model identifying key business
concepts and their relationships that are needed to understand the requirements
for the proposed system.

iii.
Any non-functional requirements,
constraints and performance-related requirements.

iv.
A conceptual class diagram identifying
your potential classes, some few instant variables and some methods.

3.
Document your interaction and your decisions. You may also need to take the role
of the secretary to take notes of the meeting with the key people at UBIC.

Questions:
a)
Write a comprehensive essay on
the project life cycle from requirements, analysis, design and implementation
and testing plans. Support your report using steps in (2i,…,2iv) if you use
USDP or relevant stages of the agile methodology of your choice. [50 marks]
b)
Develop a cost estimation model
showing the expected effort and duration of the project. [20 marks]
