Choose an art example that you have not yet discussed in our weekly module discussions. For this essay, choose a work of fine art media: painting, printmaking, photography or sculpture.
When you have selected the artist and art example for this essay assignment, observe the art closely. Study the art, make notes about the visual form of the art, and review any art historical information that is relevant to the art, artist, art style, and historical context.
The first part of the essay is a formal visual analysis of the art. In the visual analysis you will identify and describe how the artist has applied the visual elements and principles of design in the two-dimensional composition or three-dimensional form of the art. Support your visual analysis with specific details you observe in the art. Visual analysis includes:
Identification of the art. Artist name, title, date, medium, size.
Identification of the style applied in the art.
Identification of the subject matter.
Descriiption and analysis of visual elements applied in the art.
Descriiption and analysis of design principles applied in the art.
The second part of the essay includes the art historical analysis of the subject matter, style, content, and historical context of the art. Discuss in the second part of the essay how the artist communicates the meaning of the art in visual form. Support your analysis of the communication of meaning by the artist with visual details you observe in the form of the art. Art historical analysis includes:
Analysis of the content, or meaning of the art.
Explanation of the historical context of the art.
Analysis of the artist’s use of style to communicate the content of the art.
Analysis of the purpose or function of the art within it’s historical context.
Format for Midterm Essay Exam:
Essay is 1-2 pages of single spaced text, in 12 point font.
Essay is clearly organized and written using formal descriiptive language.
Essay is proofread for clarity, spelling and grammar.
Artist is referenced using their entire name, or their last name. Do not refer to artists by their first name in this essay.
Provide a URL link to the digital image of the art you discuss.
Provide a URL link to any course reading, videos, or external art history resources that are referenced or paraphrased in your essay.
Ideally, write the essay from your own perspective, showing your understanding of the visual art form, artist, style, and historical context. However, you may also include any information studied in this class and beyond.

To avoid plagiarism, cite the sources of all research or reference information. List these research sources in a Works Cited page at the end of your essay. Simply copy the URL of the webpage where you found the information you quote or paraphrase.
