Special Guest Interview on Gender from Brazil
1- Student name. Sandy Nguyen
Professor Pagan talks about how from a biological standpoint, gender identity and expression is more complex than we have been defining it. She mentions how the body is different from the mind, as gender is a social construct that has been leading ideas like how genitalia = gender and how behavior is innate to someone gender, which she states is untrue.
Professor Pagan emphasizes how ideas even outside of gender are complex and that we should respect all sorts of complexities in life.
I believe Professor Pagans perspective does add to the discussion because her experiences as a transgender woman in Brazil is important to be acknowledged. Relatively similar to the U.S, she speaks about the violence and hate crimes done to transgender people, however at the same time there are legal rights such as being able to change ones name and gender on ID.
I think it’s important to understand different cultural perspectives when talking about gender.
The question. Please respond to the student discussion above. What are the strengths of the answer What do you like How do you see the answer What do you think?
