Special Topic Presentation Counseling

Over the course of the term, students will develop a PowerPoint/Slides presentation related to family or couples counseling on a special topic of their choosing. The presentation will be a thoughtful and engaging overview of researched material through which ideas and concepts are to be communicated effectively and a meaningful class discussion facilitated. Presentations should be 10-15 slides in length and include some video and/or graphic to engage the readers. After turning the assignment in for grading, students are encouraged to share their presentation on a discussion board to share the information with their peers. Students are encouraged to research topics affecting families and couples which they do not currently hold expertise for. Suggested information to include in each presentation includes:
· Description of the issue/topic
· Literature review to examine the application of this issue to families/couples/ partners
· Detailed needs of families regarding this issue
· Theoretical Conceptualization (in your view, what is the best way to theoretically approach this with families)
· Proposed Program to assist families living with this issue
Potential issues to choose from (this is NOT an exhaustive list and you do not have to choose from these):
· LGBTQIQA+ couples, partners, and families
· Child/parent coming out as gay, trans, etc.
· Changing dynamics (divorce/separation, new child arriving, new partner being introduced)
· Substance use
· Moving and/or career changes
· Chronic illness of a parent/caretaker
