Hepatitis C is a viral infection that causes liver inflammation, sometimes leading to serious liver damage (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Another name for Hepatitis C is HCV and the viral infection can spread through a persons contaminated blood. Hepatitis C is one of the many diseases that can go unnoticed if you are not going to the doctor regularly to get checkups and blood work done. The test is called a HCV antibody test and tests for antibodies to the hepatitis C virus in blood (CDC, 2020). The group of people that are most at risk for hepatitis C are those who are born 1945 and 1965 (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Although that group of people are the ones who are at the most risk for contracting the virus, it is still important that people of all ages still be screened for the virus in order to stop the spread and to make sure those who are contaminated get the proper medical aid in order to combat the virus. The test results come back within a few days and treatment can start as soon as possible once the virus is detected.
In the past, hepatitis C was treated with the use of weekly injections and oral medications. With the advancement of modern medicine, hepatitis C is now treated with oral medications taken every day for two to six months. When in contact with someone who had the HCV virus and you are providing aid, you want to make sure that you have the proper personal protective equipment in place if their blood is prevalent. Make sure you are wearing latex gloves, face masks or face shields, and a gown that protects your skin. If you do not have a gown, ensure that you are wearing clothes that protect the skin on order to mitigate the risk of blood coming into contact with the skin. The protective measures will prevent blood from entering mucous membranes via the eyes, nose or mouth (HSI, 2022). After providing care, make sure you properly dispose of all materials that have come into contact with bodily fluids.”
