This discussion addresses module outcome 1. This discussion is intended to help you apply the reading material to a description and analysis of the broader cultural place and importance of sport in society. As the reading and viewing materials highlight, sport is often an extension of the myths and rituals that illustrate the broader values of a society. For example, sports “heroes” are often mythologized in ways that serve societal interests in categorizing exceptional societal members simply as heroes or villains.
Before participating in this discussion, make sure you have completed all video and reading content for the module. Using as many of the module readings and other module learning materials as possible, please respond to the following questions in your posts:
1) Giving direct reference to at least two of your assigned readings, explain two ways in which sport is a type of ritual for society. In answering this question, try to think of the way that fans center so many of their daily activities upon a sports actor or event. Be specific in your response.
2) Choose either the Updike story on Ted Williams or the Wolfe article on John Urschel’s “noteworthy” pursuit of a PhD in mathematics. Why is this athlete unique and interesting to the public? For example, is Urschel interesting because we assume that athletes, especially professional athletes, are unintelligent? What does either athlete’s experience say about the broader mythology surrounding sport and its icons? Explain in detail.
Your initial post should be at least 250 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings with proper APA
