At the beginning of the novel Stanley is accused of something he didn’t do and is sent to Camp Green Lake. His hopes and ideas turn into a nightmare the moment he stepped out of the bus. He arrives there feeling weak, lonely and overweight. When he arrives he’s shaky and blames his great-great-grandfather for the crime he did not do, when he started his first hole he was hurt and had blisters all over but he knew he had to continue his hole.
More days passed by and he had gotten used to digging holes everyday, he also started to notice his body started losing weight since he first came over-weight and now is gaining muscles by digging holes “His muscles had strengthened, and his hands were tough.” This is important because Stanley is compared to others in life because he started off doing hard work but then he found it easier digging holes everyday and adapted to his environment. People can relate to this because they have been through rough times in life but they have gotten past it and continued on.
By the end of the novel he finds himself happier with more self esteem and has a friend he can trust.
