STEP 1: Statement of Ethical Theory and Practice
The aim of this first writing assignment is the development of an ethical outlook through personal reflection upon the ethical theoretical issues participants have explored during in-class discussions. Students will, to that end, be developing their own Statement of Ethical Theory.
FORMATTING: In light of your considerations of major theories in meta- and normative ethics, write a statement which addresses the following prompt. This statement should be a minimum of two pages, MLA formatted. It should be double-spaced, in standard, 12 point font, consistently formatted with a minimum of two citations.
GRADING/REVISIONS: You will receive an initial grade based on the rubric provided. Once you have received a grade and feedback, you may then re-submit for an additional 2 possible points.
PROMPT: First, explain how do you define the good (metaethics). Is it real (moral realism / moral objectivism) or non-real (moral anti-realism / moral subjectivism)? Explain your answer in terms we have covered. Then explain what what standards are most reliably used when determining an ethical course of action (normative ethics) and how these relate to your claims about the nature of the good. Are consequences most important? Which? For whom? To what end? Are obligations more important? Which? Is the cultivation of good moral character and practical wisdom most important? Explain what such moral character looks like. Is some combination of these options or some other option most reliable in determining an ethical course of action? Be specific. Use examples. Be sure to use technical jargon precisely and correctly. You should address alternative perspectives and attempt to justify your view with arguments and examples.
