Straparola: A Tale from Pleasant Nights

The Pleasant Nights of Straparola is often cited as being the first European storybook to contain fairy-tales. It is told in a frame narrative, and of the 75 stories contained in this book, 15 are considered fairy tales. I am posting one simple story for you this week: Fortunio and the Siren.

When you have finished reading, write a short analysis of this tale

First, look at characters, plot, and settings… can you sum up these elements as presented in a short report (about 100 words) that highlights the tale?

Next, as a ancient fairy tale, is there text or references in the story that you did not understand? Do you think this story is still readable today, even though it is almost 500 years old?

Then, What other fairy tales can you think of with similar characters, elements, and/or themes?

Finally, share your opinion on this fairy tale… Did this represent your idea of what a fairy tale should be? What did you like about this story and what did you not like.
