Strategies of Social Science Research

Please only cite using the journal article no outside sources
Include in text citations (including page number)
2. Summarize:

• the problematic of your target article (what key questions or concerns does the author(s) put forward? Has previous research addressed this question? If so, how? If not, why not?). Mention a few “signals” your target article presents regarding its problematic (e.g. a citation of important previous research upon which your target article improves)

• the argument or central claim of the article. Be especially careful to do this in your own words. Avoid direct quotations (see #5), and be sure to include one sentence that begins “This article argues that….”

3. Identify and discuss an alternate research strategy that could have been used to examine the same or a very similar problem to the one discussed in your chosen article. Use the resources already mentioned above (requirement #3) to help you imagine and describe this alternative approach. Discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of this alternative approach in comparison to that adopted in your chosen article. (You’ll have to speculate here and imagine what it might be like to conduct this sort of research on this sort of topic).

• Use one of the following for your alternative strategy (information on all of them can be found in the SAGE research methods resource – check the methods map under “research methods” or “research design”):
▪ Historical research
▪ Ethnography
▪ Survey research
▪ Case study research
▪ Action research
▪ Narrative research

Clearly identify at least one citation in your target article that refers to the
methodological approach or research strategy used by your target article

4. Small conclusion
