Structural Racism in American Life: Popular beliefs that “non-white” peoples were in some ways
inferior to whites have long shaped life in the United States. Such ideas of white supremacy were
prevalent between 1877 and 1924 and resulted in laws and/or actions that gave white
Americans clear economic advantages. Native Americans, African Americans, Chinese immigrants,
and Filipinos, among others, suffered the consequences. Write an essay in which you discuss the
treatment of “non-white” groups discussed in class. Your essay should:
• Focus on three different “non-white” groups
• Discuss the important laws, events, and/or actions that resulted from racial prejudice
against each group during this period
• Explain the economic advantages that white Americans gained over each group through
those laws, events, and/or actions
