The research paper should be 1200-1500 words. That is around 4-5 pages.
Be extremely organized. You should have a formal introduction that ENDS with your thesis. This is a statement of the argument you are making. **Do not say “This paper will discuss…..” or similar. Just state your position, such as “Rumors surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy are still prevalent in 2021 due to social media and You Tube.”
Paragraphs need transitions and topic sentences. Restate your thesis at the beginning of a conclusion.
Use at least 4 outside, RELIABLE sources (in addition to any of the essays in our textbook that you choose to include). The NSCC Library databases contain reliable, fact-checked articles.
Include at least 6 citations. Only one of those citations can be a block quote.
At least 3 of the citations must be paraphrases. Summary and paraphrases require a citation just like a quote because they contain borrowed ideas.
Make sure to introduce all quotes with a signal phrase. A quote cannot stand alone. NOTE: A website will not have a page number, so you will not use a set of parentheses if you introduce the author’s name in your signal phrase. Historian David Overby asserts, “quote quote quote.” –no parentheses neededHistorians have detected inaccuracies regarding the event including, “quote, quote, quote” (Overby). –parentheses needed to identify author/source
In a research paper, you will have a citation in basically every paragraph unless a paragraph is entirely your own discussion of the issue.
Avoid PLAGIARISM. You cannot borrow a person’s words, phrase, or ideas without a citation. Direct quotes of three or more consecutive words and technical language should be placed inside quotation marks. It is better to have too many citations than not enough.
Write in academic third person. The words you/your or I/me are not permitted.
GRADING SCALE: Content 50; Organization 50; Editing 50; MLA documentation 50.
Remember this is an argumentative research paper. Your thesis should clearly state the argument you are making.
