Dual diagnosis refers to an individual who is struggling with a substance/alcohol abuse diagnosis and another DSM 5 disorder such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Consider the psychological, environmental and socio-cultural aspects of the disorder you choose, with specific regard to psychopharmacological intervention.
Your paper must include all of the following:
Assessment – describe the clinical symptoms that manifest with this disorder; describe any risk factors (genetics, comorbidity, environmental) of this disorder (see the DSM 5). Include at least 1 assessment instrument for this disorder.
Treatment – describe known treatments for this disorder, including psychotherapy and psychopharmacological methodologies. Identify which pharmacology options might be used to treat this disorder; what dose and frequency and guidelines for monitoring medication side-effects, physiological risks and effectiveness.
Consider integrated care treatment; integrated care brings together health-care professionals who work in teams to treat the whole person (APA, 2010).
Discuss cultural considerations and potential ethical issues.
