Instructions for doing Needs assessment 3
Even though Needs Assessment 1 and 2 come first, start early with selecting people to interview. The first thing to consider is that you are interviewing three people about your topic(s) and community. Two people should be knowledgeable about the topic(s) from a normative perspective and even a comparative perspective. The people you interview can be social workers, professionals, administrators, elected officials or other community decision makers. Be purposeful and planful about who you choose to interview. Reach out to professionals who could address different aspects of the topic/community— maybe professionals who see things through different lens (this is a metaphor)? Avoid doing convenience interviews (for instance, interviews with classmates) unless you can’t get anyone else to interview, and your classmate is a professional in this area.
Your third interview is a client, consumer or someone who has utilized the services or community resources. Someone who has experienced the perceived or felt need in your community.
Minors and vulnerable populations should not be included in the interviews.
Please begin early to contact people for the interviews. It will take more time than you think. Preferably the interview will be done by zoom or Microsoft teams and recorded.
When you contact the person, emphasize that their participation is voluntary. Schedule the interview to meet their schedule and preferences rather than yours -even though your schedule matters, of course.
In the interview you are taking the position of learner and guest as the interviewer. .
When you send the zoom or teams link prior to the meeting and when you meet with the interviewee and start the recording, go over the above instructions with them, and ask for their permission to record before you start the interview.
In the interview, ask them what they want you to call them in the interview and if you are taking notes, let them know you will be taking notes. After you transcribe the interview,
Give them at least three days to read it and get it back to you.
After the interview, thank them, and send a thank you note.
From Needs Assessment 1 and 2 (your literature/documents review), materials in the course shell, and your own insights from your experience with the topic/community. and articles from the Community develop an interview guide. You will submit your interview guide and overview of your development of your interview guide in Section 3.
Instructions for writing your Needs Assessment 3
(6 pages including references would be too short, and 20 pages including references would be too long. 8-15 pages with references would be ideal for this section).
Introduction: In Section 3 begin by clearly identifying your topic (again). In a paragraph or two discuss how Needs assessment 1 and 2 and the grading and discussions afterwards informed Needs assessment 3. And, then discuss how you are organizing Needs assessment 3 so the reader will know where you are taking them. In the introduction, introduce who you interviewed, their titles or qualifications for your interview and briefly state why you selected them. (7 points)
Interview guide(s)
Discuss the development of your interview guide (s). Use citations as needed. Discuss how the interview guide is reflective of NA1 & 2 and what you have learned in this course. You may use the same interview guide for each person or you may not. If you use different interview guides, discuss why they are different. Refer the reader to the Interview Guides in the Appendices. (6 points)
Interview 1 with a professional or community leader
Start with the person’s name, titles, how related to the topic (even though you are repeating yourself). Briefly and professional discuss the process of contacting them and interviewing them based on the information in Instructions for Doing Interview 3. In the Instructions for Doing Interview 3, state that you did what was highlighted in yellow in this section, and the interviewees response . .. if that is applicable. (8 points)

In 2-3 paragraphs summarize what you found from the totality of three interviews. What were the themes from the three interviews. Avoid giving an opinion, recommendations or conclusions.. (6 points)
