In an essay of approximately 500 words (double spaced/12 point font/ 2 page max.) write an extended analytical summary of one of the articles discussed in class from your They Say/I Say textbook. Your introduction should provide some background/context on the larger issue discussed in the essay as mainly stated from the text, concluding in a focused thesis statement which restates (paraphrases) the author’s thesis in your own words and follows the formula (signal phrase): In his essay “Hidden Intellectualism,” Gerald Gaff, professor of English at Illinois University, argues…. The remaining body paragraphs should present the author’s main points (typically as topic sentences) in the order they appear in the text, then outline in brief how the author supports those points, paraphrasing or if appropriate quoting directly from the text (See Chapter 3 pages 47-55 in They Say/ I Say for information on how to appropriately frame quotes using the “quotation sandwich method”), as well as explain how support is used by the author to back up his main points and hence his thesis (i.e. explain what type of support the author uses: reasoning, logic, concrete example, personal experience, direct quote or creditable statics, etc. and its significance in supporting the author’s claim) in the reasoning portion of your body paragraphs. The main points (your topic sentences) as summarized in your essay should follow the order in which they appear in the summarized essay (i.e. avoid skipping around between main points; rather, summarize them in the order in which they appear in the summarized essay itself). Your conclusion should restate the author’s main claim as well as rephrase the recommendations or conclusions with which the summarized author concludes his essay. Your summary should maintain a neutral tone and remain in the third person throughout, as well as effectively use transitions to illustrate and preserve the relationship between ideas as presented in the structure and organization of the original argument. Be sure your essay adheres to the guidelines of scholarly writing as covered in the textbooks and discussed in class (i.e. formal diction, proper essay structure, grammatical correctness, coherency of writing and thought, etc.). Your essay must be properly cited in MLA format and include a one page works-cited as the last page of the paper (See the Little Seagulls Handbook pages: 175-177, # 19, for how to properly cite a work in an anthology).
