Task: Summarize the article – “Yuval Noah Harari: ‘If sex survived AIDS, hugging will survive COVID'”
Word count: 300-400 words
Format: APA Style paragraphs
Assignment description:
In a well-structured set of 1-2 paragraphs (300-400 words), summarize the article “Yuval Noah Harari: ‘If sex survived AIDS, hugging will survive COVID'”
Your purpose: Your purpose is to summarize the article so that someone who has never read the article before can read your summary and get a clear idea of what the article is about. This will require you to summarize the article’s main idea and supporting ideas. Do not use quotations. Make sure you paraphrase the main and supporting ideas.
Your audience: The audience is your professor. Therefore, you need to use a formal tone. Do not use contractions (aren’t, shouldn’t, won’t). Do not use colloquialisms (Besides, alright). Do not use “you” (instead of “Kalita does not want you to be afraid,” you can write, “Kalita does not want people to be afraid.”) Do not use “I think” or “I” anywhere.
Your genre : You are writing in an academic context. You are writing an academic summary. This means that your paragraph should be in proper APA style and that it should follow the conventions of summary writing:
In the first sentence, including 3 things – the full title, the full author name, and one sentence that identifies the main idea of the writer. Includes the title of the article and the author of the article. Write in your own words. Do not include your opinion of ideas in the article. Do not include any facts or ideas that are not already in the article.
Your Language and Tone: Write in complete sentences. Ensure your paragraph includes an introductory sentence, support sentences and a concluding sentence. The first sentence of your summary should state the main idea of the article and identify the author and title of the article. Use formal language (no first person) that is appropriate to the context of academic writing.
Your APA format: Use the cover page format shown in the Seneca libraries model APA template. Double space. Include a heading on each page (follow the APA format). Include a References list (just list the article by Murthy using APA format). Do not use in-text citations.
Your content: In a summary, you SELECT sentences from the original article and then paraphrase them. You select sentences which carry the key ideas (most important ideas) in the article. Therefore, your mark depends on the quality of your paraphrasing and also the correct choice of sentences that you have decided to paraphrase.
Spelling and grammar: Always pay attention to your spelling and grammar in your academic and professional work! Marks are assigned based on how correctly you express the main idea and supporting ideas of the article.
