Support of Levy Referendum to Increase School Funding

Consider you are working as a principal in a district that is trying to pass a levy referendum to raise funds for schools. If the referendum passes, taxes on a $200,000 home will increase by $250 per year. The average home in your district is valued at $180,000. Only 30% of the households in your district have school-aged children, while 70% do not. The superintendent has asked that you, as principal of the only high school in the district, write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper arguing in favor of the levy referendum.

Instructions:
1. Write a 2-3 page letter outlining why the citizens of your community should support this.
effort.
2. Cite evidence from the course readings or other scholarly sources.
**you use other scholary sources & I will add sources from the course readings upon
completion
3. In-text citations are not required for your letter, however please include an APA
formatted reference page for any sources used to draft your letter.
Additional information:
According to New Prague Area Schools District Site, a levy referendum “asks voters to
support additional funds for day-to-day school operating costs. This could include hiring
staff, paying utility costs, purchasing learning materials or paying for other operational
activies. (npaschools.org/levy-questions-answers)

Idea for writing:
Include what these extra funds will support:
– Academics (Covid has creatted achievement gap so we need to actively be fighting against
it especially in the areas of reading, writing, and math.). Perhaps funds can go towards
Summer Educational Enrichment Programs, such as: Reading camp, Mathathons, Pen Pal
Parties).
– Mental Health Programs (for both staff and students)–Teachers are burning out at a very
high rate. This year we have fewer teachers returning than ever before…In the small island
community that I live it, teachers are very difficult to replace and having unfilled positions is
detrimental to students education. There have also been huge swells in student behavior,
students are fatigued and some are too young or don’t have the skills to regulate their
behaviors independently. Possibly a program to get students actively engaged in the
community (example programs: creation of a school coffee shop for high school, middle
schoolers read to elementary students, elementary students make crafts for hospital,
nursing homes, etc.)
