1. Examine closely Doreen’s character. What stereotype does she portray, and why would she befriend someone like Esther Greenwood: a small-town girl, who is clearly inexperienced and very sensitive?

Given that Plath’s novel is highly biographical, let’s take the opportunity to connect the reading with personal experience (i.e. family expectations, social conventions, the desire to belong and be accepted, etc.).
