A TEDTALK ASSIGNMENT 15 Points
Goals: The goal of this assignment is
not only to analyze what the
TedTalk speaker is arguing concerning a focused issue/topic, but to
analyze how the speaker
presents the argument. You’ll do this by analyzing the use of rhetorical
strategies and delivery strategies (voice, body language, movement)
Assignment Criteria: Write an essay that discusses
the content and analyzes the rhetorical and delivery strategies of the speaker.
The essay should be in MLA format and between 2-4 pages.

CONTENT 4pts
Purpose
In a few sentences, identify what the purpose is of
the TedTalks presentation. What is the speaker attempting to communicate
to the audience, and what is he/she hoping to achieve through this
communication?
Novelty

What
is the novel (original) idea or perspective being presented? How is this
idea/perspective different from what we usually hear about this topic?

RHETORICAL STRATEGIES 5pts
Examine the author’s reputation, authority, and/or
expertise.
Should we put any stock in what he/she is saying? Why
or why not?
Quality and quantity of supporting evidence.
You may also want to consider any bias that the
writer might have toward the subject and the effect of that bias upon the
argument being presented.
You should identify any attempts on the part of the
writer to evoke a particular emotion from the audience.
Additionally, you will want to consider whether or
not appealing to emotion is an effective strategy for the argument being discussed.

DELIVERY STRATEGIES 4pts
Presentation
Delivery refers to vocal variety, pauses,
facial expressions, and gestures.
Presentational
Language refers to the meaning derived
from the words we choose.

Consider
the speaker’s diction (word choice), and use of figurative, vivid, and concrete
words. Also evaluate the use of imagery, metaphor, repetition, and
alliteration. Finally, consider the use of inclusive language.
