What is the assignment?
Write an essay that defends a thesis of your choice related to the readings and
discussions of class. The essay not only summarizes the main points in each
work, it also explains the significance of the ideas presented and offers critical notes about the
arguments given.
Is it an argumentative essay?
Yes, you need to develop a thesis in response to the question you decide on. We do our best work
when we are trying to answer something important to us and convince others to see our position.
Using evidence effectively to make our case and persuade others of the strength of our argument
is an important skill to develop.
Do we need to use outside sources or just the readings?
Ideally, your question and response should be found in the course readings alone, bit because
they are rich enough but also to limit y9ur need for outside research and to make the case for
your argument with common evidence from the course. An outside source or two is ok; make
sure to document it appropriately and do not rely too much on outside reading.
