the Antigone by Sophocles

1. Close Reading of a Single Text: Following the pattern of a literary analysis-style essay, do an in depth reading of the Antigone by Sophocles in which you a) utilize literary terms to categorize and discuss the various elements at work, and b) make an assertion regarding meaning in the piece. Example theses might sound like:
“Although the play is named Antigone, the most forceful speech regarding free will and the state comes from Haemon.
Or,

“The plot of Antigone is intended to focus readers not on the burial of Polyneices but on the effort it takes to change the mind of a leader.”

Please remember the following things:
Your essay should be double-spaced and in a simple (e.g. Times New Roman) 12-point
font.
Proofread your essay (for errors of spelling, punctuation, grammar) before you hand it in.
For all matters of style, citation and attribution, please follow MLA Style, summarized in, e.g. Diana Hacker, A Pocket Style Manual or other MLA citation resource.
Your essay will likely be an exercise in close reading of the piece or pieces you choose Your discussion will probably proceed in stages like: (1) an assertion about the piece; (2) a quotation from the piece to support that assertion; (3) an explanation of/commentary on what is being said in the quotation you choose; and (4) a conclusion about what you have just asserted.
This exercise will be repeated as many times as you need to defend your thesis statement.
