The best presentations come from passion and interest. What social movement do you feel passionately about? What do you want to research?

PROMPT:
Intercultural Communication Studies has taught you the theories and concepts to empower you to communicate with and about diverse groups of people. You’ve learned how to gather history and cultural context to better inform your communication practices. You’ve also learned how to read verbal and non-verbal cues, analyze popular cultural texts, and understand symbolisms in cultural spaces. Now, apply this knowledge with this intercultural social movement presentation.

Prepare a 5-minute engaging research presentation using power point that applies these theories or concepts we’ve learned in class to an intercultural social movement, which could be a group organizing to respond to an important current issue facing society. You are welcome to organize the presentation to your style, but it should contain at least these elements:
1. A clear definition of the theories or concepts you will be using;
2. Context and information about the movement – this information should come from the group itself AND also from external analysis of the movement;
3. Your analysis of the aims and strategies of the group and why they have/have not been successful in reaching their goals

PROJECT ELEMENTS:

I.Research
-The best presentations come from passion and interest. What social movement do you feel passionately about? What do you want to research?
-Do extensive research into the ways the social movement defines itself.
-Do extensive research into the ways others define the social movement.

For example, I would conduct research into the movement of undocumented young people who since 2011 have organized an annual “National Coming out of the Shadows Day” on March 10th. They proclaim that they are “Undocumented, Unapologetic, and Unafraid” and share their stories and their humanity.

Here is how they define themselves:

Here is coverage of how others have analyze and define the movement:

Your presentation project asks that you focus on a social movement from an intercultural communication studies lens.

WHAT TO DISCUSS ON POWERPOINT
– What social movement are you researching to present?
– Why did you choose this social movement?
– What are some of the most interesting or inspiring aspect of this movement you’ve learned in conducting your research?
– What do we gain from considering this movement from an intercultural communication studies perspective?

* Power point presentation must include speaker notes total of 5 minutes *
