Capstone Service Learning Project and Paper Requirements
This page provides an overview and timeline for your Capstone Service Learning Project and Paper requirements. This is a two-part assignment; the first part requires you to complete 5 hours of volunteer service pertaining to one of the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns. The second part of the assignment is a paper outlining your service hours and how they relate to the critical concern you chose.
The Capstone Service Learning Project is a volunteer activity that you will plan and complete in your community, addressing one of the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns. The goal of the planning and implementation is to demonstrate multiple perspectives, effective and respectful communication, collaboration to address global challenges, and to examine Mercy Critical Concerns. This project and related discussions are a rich source of information in exploring how well you have met both the core learning objectives and the college-wide learning objectives. The Capstone Project is designed to address at least one of the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns of Immigration, Racism, Women, Nonviolence, and Earth.

This 5-hour volunteer project will be completed at an agency other than one in which you currently work or volunteer. The 5 hours of volunteer time will be documented on the Capstone Project Verification Form for service hours which requires the agency name, date served, signature of agency representative, your signature, and documentation of the activity in which you participated. The verification form for service hours will be submitted in Week 4, and the Capstone Service Learning Project Paper will be submitted in Week 5.
Objectives for the service learning activity:
Analyze multiple perspectives diverse viewpoints.
Demonstrate understanding of context, audience, and purpose to promote effective and meaningful communication.
Integrate respectful and responsible communication.
Actively engage with team members to address global challenges.
Thoughtfully analyze and apply the concepts of the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns
Suggestions for possible service projects include (but are not limited to):
Earth: Deliver a presentation to a group of children about the earth, sustainability, recycling, composting, and so forth.
Earth: Work at a nature center helping with planting, clean up, or setting up for events.
Women: Conduct a food drive and tour of a women’s shelter or nonprofit agency in your community.
Women: Conduct a baby item drive at Young Parents Network (YPN).
Racism: Organize a public reading of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights in your volunteer organization, community, or school.
Racism/Immigration: Volunteer at Catherine McAuley Center or agency that promotes diversity to raise awareness and impact self-reflection.
Immigration: Volunteer at an agency providing English as a second language services.
Immigration: Aid with ESL programming at a community center.
Nonviolence: Volunteer at a community organization to raise awareness regarding domestic or sexual violence such as Waypoint or Riverview Center; or organize hygiene or food drives for these organizations.

The Capstone Service Learning Project Paper is the second part of this assignment. In this paper, you will address at least one of the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns and how it relates to your Capstone Learning Service Project. The Capstone project is required for you to consider disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and global perspectives associated with the chosen Sisters of Mercy Critical Concern.
Your paper should be three to five pages and formatted according to APA guidelines.
For the paper you will:
Describe your project.Identify the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concern you addressed with your project.
Identify the disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and global perspectives you addressed with your project.
Identify your project audience and describe how you presented your project to them.
Describe who you worked with to complete this project.
