The Catcher In The Rye Essay

Choose one of the following prompts and, using the novel, write an essay that fully answers the question. Be sure to include references from the novel to demonstrate your understanding of the prompt and how the prompt relates to the text. The essay should be at least two pages. You must have a proper heading, use Font #12, Times New Roman, and double space. You should have an introduction, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Many novels focus on individuals involved in a struggle to find themselves or to seek a purpose in life. Sometimes the effort pays off and sometimes it does not. Write an essay in which you explain Holdens search or struggle throughout the novel and assess to what extent he succeeds in overcoming his struggle or finding a purpose.

The death of Allie, Holdens younger brother, has had a profound impact on Holdens life. Explain how Allies death has affected Holdens life in at least three ways.

The dramatic part of the novel stems from two things: that the heros conflict is both internal and external and that it increases in intensity. Discuss three conflicts (at least one must be an internal conflict) that Holden faces and whether or not these conflicts are resolved by the end of the novel.
