Being able to support the various backgrounds, personalities, strengths, values, and experiences of the families and children we work with is one of our most important responsibilities as early childhood professionals. One of the diverse backgrounds that we will likely encounter in our work is with immigrant families: “Our nation is becoming more diverse, and recent trends in immigration are the most important driver of U.S. diversity” (Curenton & Iruka, 2013, section 4.1). Therefore, it is important that we understand how to differentiate the support we provide families based on their needs.
