The Oral History Paper is due by 9pm Sunday July 18. Make sure to read the sample oral history papers on to get
an idea of how to integrate the interview materials with the academic
sources to write a smooth narrative. The papers are not perfect but
they are good examples of the narrative style. Make sure to read through
the guidelines and the rubric for the oral history paper. Make the
necessary changes to the format on Word – format requirements are the
first component on the rubric for the assignment. The focus of your
paper should be on the interviewee’s experiences and how they connect to
the larger cultural contexts in which they occurred. The writer (you)
should not be visible in the paper. The narrative should be smooth and
subtle – I should not read phrases such as “in the interview,” “I
asked,” “she answered,” etc. You will be using APA referencing format in
this paper. You need both in text citations as well as a reference
section. The first paragraph of your paper is the introduction. Your
introduction for this paper should entice the reader in, introduce your
interviewee by name, and the last sentence should be a clear thesis
statement (Using the experiences of xxxxx this paper will explore….).
The introduction does not need to be longer than half a page. The rest
of your essay should be telling the story of your interviewee’s
experiences and how they connect to the larger cultural contexts in
which they occurred. Make sure that you take the time to do research to
find academic sources that will meaningfully connect with your
interviewee’s experiences. Talking about something like Vital Force
Theory is NOT going to be considered a meaningful connection as that
theory was long gone before any of your interviewees were alive. Find
relevant connections to ACADEMIC sources. The interview does NOT count
as one of the academic sources.
